When Elsie Larson of A Beautiful Mess moved into a new home earlier this year, and reached out to us about using one of our wallpapers in her master bedroom, we jumped at the opportunity. We have been longtime fans and followers of her wildly popular blog, and couldn't wait to see what this DIY master would do with our paper. And boy, she did not disappoint!

Light, bright, and full of cozy texture, Elsie's master bedroom is the serene retreat from the craziness of the world that we're craving now more than ever. And with just the right amount of neutral pattern, this gorgeous space ticks off every box on our dream bedroom checklist. We caught up with Elsie to learn more about what inspired this space, her love for handmade, and her lifelong wallpaper obsession.

Tell us a little about your background and how A Beautiful Mess came to be?

I started A Beautiful Mess about 13 years ago, just for fun. At the time I had no idea it could or would eventually become a business. After a few years of blogging, I started to realize that there was traction and opportunity there. My sister became my partner and together we expanded A Beautiful Mess and built it into a real company. Today we have over 7,000 blog posts in our archive.

Interiors are something I have had an interest in since childhood—even wallpaper! In high school I begged my mom to help me wallpaper my bathroom with rubber ducky pattern wallpaper. It's something I have always been obsessed with and continue to be inspired by!

Your brand's motto is "Stay home and make something." Why do you think hand making is so special?

In high school I had an amazing home economics teacher, who was one of my mentors. She gave me a lot of extra encouragement and helped me form the confidence that would eventually lead me to a creative career. Over and over, she would teach us, "If you can buy it, you can make it." She would say, "Just go to the mall and find something nice you want to buy, and I'll teach you how to make it." This realization changed my life and in some ways is still the theme of our blog today!

You used our Storyline (White) wallpaper a gorgeous master bedroom renovation in your own home. What inspired the design of this space?

For my own bedroom, my biggest priority is that it is calming and bright. I really love a white bedroom. The Storyline paper is so unique because it is so detailed with so many cute illustrations—but at a glance, it just feels like a bit of neutral pattern. It's one of my favorite wallpapers of all time!

What's your decorating and design process like?

When decorating, I try to use what I already have, and when renovating I prefer the challenge of staying as low-waste as possible. So I start with what I have and then I add to it to build into my dream look!

What are your tips for working with a monochrome palette, but still making sure there is plenty of visual interest?

I love adding a lot of texture to a neutral space. When you use all neutrals, there is no such thing as too much texture!

Hygge is a Danish concept of finding coziness in life's small moments and simple pleasures. What adds hygge to your life?

I am obsessed with the idea of hygge. Last year I read three books in a row on it. It's very inspiring. I love the idea of making your home into your own cozy refuge—a place to learn, read, cook, and try new things. With little children, this is especially magical! Our home is very hygge. During the holidays, I go bananas adding so many twinkle lights, glowing trees, candles (usually LED, but they still add a vibe!), and baking cozy recipes.
