A Midsummer Night's Dream: How Team H&W Styles SS19 Bedding

A Midsummer Night's Dream: How Team H&W Styles SS19 Bedding | Hygge & WestSummer officially begins this week, and with summer solstice knocking on our days, team H&W felt the urge to start the season on a fresh foot with brand new bedding from our Spring/Summer '19 collection. With personal design styles as diverse as our new bedding is versatile, we each set out to create our own version of a midsummer night's dream (bedroom).

Aimee Lagos

Hygge & West: Which SS19 bedding did you select and why?

Aimee Lagos: I chose Wildflower (Emerald). Our bedroom is pretty simple compared to the rest of the house. My husband has requested that I keep it “calm” design-wise, so I like being able to add a bold color on the bed to create some interest. I’ve also recently snuck in a rug—I think that my husband has resigned himself to coming home from a work trip to a wallpapered bedroom eventually. Ever since we started developing this collection, this pattern and color combination has been one of my favorites. The green is so beautiful and unique. It brightens up the space.

H&W: Do you have any bedroom styling tips you can share?

AL: We aren’t fans of photos in other rooms of the house, so we have a big gallery wall of favorite images in the bedroom. It has sort of organically expanded over time and I don’t actually love how everything is arranged, so my styling tip would be to plan out the placement on the wall before hanging photos! And many people consider this a bedroom no-no, but we have a TV in our bedroom and love it. We recently stayed at the Hotel Emma in San Antonio and they have their TVs on the wall in a beautiful, but simple frame with a black background so it recedes into the wall. I’m planning to recreate that in our room as soon as I can find the time.

H&W: Do you have a recurring dream or nightmare?

AL: At least once a week, I have a dream that I’ve been registered for a class that I had no idea about (I don’t even know where the classroom is!) and now I have to take an exam for it in a few days. Perhaps as a testament to how type A I was when I was in school, my reaction is “Well, now I have to learn an entire semester’s worth of material in a couple days”—my reaction is never that I can’t possibly take this test. It’s still really stressful, though, and if I realize I’m having that dream, I’ll wake myself up to get out of it. I used to have a very vivid recurring dream that I could fly, which was wonderful. I haven’t had it in years now, and I miss it.

My favorite thing about my bed is: everything! I love our bed. I love that our dogs and, when he feels like it, our cat are allowed to hang out and snuggle while we watch TV. I love that when they were little our boys used to pile in with us on weekend mornings and then we’d get all our pets to come in the bed, too, and laugh about how the whole family was in the bed together. I look forward to going to bed every night—it’s a little haven from all the busy-ness and craziness of our lives.

Christiana Coop

H&W: Which SS19 bedding did you select and why?

Christiana Coop: I chose Wildflower (Emerald) because I absolutely love it! As soon as I knew we were making it, I chose the other elements (wallpaper and curtains) to work with it. The color is fresh and rich and the sweet flowers feel a touch of 1920s Parisian to me.

H&W: Do you have any bedroom styling tips you can share?

CC: 1. Always make your bed and fluff your pillows. I find on the days I do that, I’m so much happier to see from a distance and/or be in the bedroom. Plus, I’m less tempted to go work in bed, which is a terrible habit of mine that I am trying to break. 2. White sheets work perfectly with all bedding patterns, but I just swapped out my cozy, flannel, white sheet set with a crisp, cool cotton one to prepare for the hotter season and it makes a big difference comfort-wise.

H&W: Do you have a recurring dream or nightmare?

CC: Yes! My teeth fall out and it’s the weirdest and most frightening feeling. According to Google, it could represent stress, feelings of powerlessness, or loss of control. This probably explains why I have this nightmare a lot more since you-know-who became president.

My favorite thing about my bed is: when the dogs sneak up on it around 5:00 AM, which seems close enough to morning that I let them stay and snuggle with me till we have to get up.

A Midsummer Night's Dream: How Team H&W Styles SS19 Bedding | Andanza Navy | Laundry Studio | Hygge & West

Melissa Andersen

H&W: Which SS19 bedding did you select and why?

Melissa Andersen: I chose Andanza (Navy). I love the contrast of the delicate, lace-like pattern with strong, bold navy. I think it hits all the right notes in terms of being not too soft and not too hard. I also believe there is no more classic color combination than blue and white—it always feels fresh and modern, but timeless.

H&W: Do you have any bedroom styling tips you can share?

MA: I used to be a total maximalist as far as accessories—I loved collecting things I found beautiful or interesting and displaying every single one of them. But in this stage in my life, with a 6-month-old daughter, a busy job, and an active social/family life, my mind is so scattered that I don't have the room for as much visual clutter anymore. I've found that I really enjoy fewer pieces that make a statement, and clean, unfussy surfaces. The things in a space matter far less to me now than the memories made there.

H&W: Do you have a recurring dream or nightmare?

MA: Unfortunately, yes! I have a very stressful recurring dream that I have to pee but can't find a bathroom, or I find one but there's something wrong with it that is preventing me from using it (no toilet paper, there's an endless line to get in, etc.). The whole dream is spent frantically looking for somewhere to finally go!

My favorite thing about my bed is: crisp sheets, a cool pillow, and having the whole family (two- and four-legged!) snuggled up together on lazy weekend mornings.

A Midsummer Night's Dream: How Team H&W Styles SS19 Bedding | Bloom Taupe | Emily Isabella | Hygge & West

Ola Supernat

H&W: Which SS19 bedding did you select and why?

OS: I chose Bloom (Taupe) for its graphic and lighthearted spin on a polka dot and floral pattern. Our bedroom is still very much a work in progress (even though we’ve been in our house for over 4 years!), so I went with the Taupe colorway—a lovely neutral that brings sophistication to the playful design and that will surely match whatever we eventually decide to do with our bedroom.

H&W: Do you have any bedroom styling tips you can share?

OS: Make the room about you and whatever makes you happy. For me, that means simple and curated, yet relaxed; for someone else it may be an abundance of pattern, like Christiana’s bedroom (which I love, but I have to compromise with my boyfriend). If the space you wake up in makes you smile, your day is bound to be off to a good start. And always add plants!

H&W: Do you have a recurring dream or nightmare?

OS: I can recall only one semi-recurring dream—I dreamt it twice about four plus years apart (grade school and high school). I was a retainer inside an egg (like a chicken); then I cracked my way out of the egg; then the dream transitioned to me (still as a retainer) riding in the back of a Santa-like sleigh across a starry sky. Can’t recall who was driving.

My favorite thing about my bed is: definitely the bedding set!

A Midsummer Night's Dream: How Team H&W Styles SS19 Bedding | Bloom Bluebell | Emily Isabella | Hygge & West

Paige Tuttle

H&W: Which SS19 bedding did you select and why?

Paige Tuttle: I selected the Bloom (Bluebell) bedding because I wanted a pop of color in my room without having the bedding be too much or something that I would get tired of quickly. It is the perfect mix of color, fun, and functionality.

H&W: Do you have any bedroom styling tips you can share?

PT: If you are trying to update your bedroom, find objects that you can refurbish or reuse. My headboard used to be my grandparents' and all it took was painting it black to make a statement in my room.

H&W: Do you have a recurring dream or nightmare?

PT: I have a recurring nightmare about being late. No matter if I have work, school, or an exam early the next day, I will have a dream that I oversleep and am either late or totally miss it.

My favorite thing about my bed is: my pillow!
