Bedtime Stories with the H&W Team

Our team here at Hygge & West hails from all different parts of the country, comes from many different backgrounds, and represents a wide array of heritages and cultures. But there's one thing we all have in common: we love pattern!

So when we launched our new collection of pattern-filled bedding, we knew it was the perfect opportunity to showcase our different sensibilities and aesthetics. Keep scrolling to see how we each styled our new cozy cocoons, as well as our bedtime rituals, sleep habits, and all things snuggly.

CHRISTIANA COOP

What pattern and colorway did you choose and why?
I chose the Arabesque (Ochre) because I just love how soft and light it feels. And, with a few throw pillows to tie things together, I personally that it actually works with my black and gold Diamante wallpaper (I do enjoy a crazy pattern mix though). I also have the Arabesque wallpaper in pink in my hallway, so it ties pretty nicely with that too :)

Do you make your bed every morning?
Yes, I would say 99% of the time. I work from home, so if I don?t make my bed, there?s more temptation to go take a nap in it. Plus I do believe that making your bed is one small task to complete as a way to successfully start a day and it?s really nice to pull down the bedding at night and tuck in.

YES or NO
Working from bed?
Yes. I have a (some might say) terrible habit of working on my lap top in bed with the dogs and the Today Show. It?s a nice way to ease into the work day. And, luckily I can?t stand Megyn Kelly, so 9:00 is my stopping point and then I officially get out of bed and get on with the day in a more respectable/professional manner :)

Breakfast (or any meal) in bed?
I try not to, but? Dining in bed is one of my ?secret single behavior? things I?ll do though when I?m by myself and no one?s watching (except for the dogs because they don?t judge me)

TV in the bedroom?
Yes.

Sweet Calum caught enjoying our new bedding.

How many hours of sleep do you need each night? How many do you actually get?
I?d say 8, and I get around 7.

What position do you sleep in?
On my right side or coffin style if I?m really tired.

What does your bedtime routine involve?
I don?t think I really have one. I like to be in bed by 10 though. I?m old.

Bedtime Stories with the H&W Team

One pillow or two? 1 to sleep on, 1 to hug.

Socks or no socks? Absolutely no socks. I can?t stand sleeping in socks. I can?t even get to sleep with them on.

White noise or silence? Silence

Pitch black or night light? Pitch black

I simply cannot go to bed without: brushing my teeth and saying goodnight to Joe.

AIMEE LAGOS

What pattern and colorway did you choose and why?
I have Hydrangea (Cobalt) in our room. It?s been my favorite since we first saw this as a colorway option ? I just love the colors. It?s also nice because it isn?t ?too girly? as my husband would say ? it?s a nice ?compromise floral?. Last, it seemed ?pet friendly? since all 4 of our pets are frequently on our bed.

Do you make your bed every morning?
I can?t say I do it every morning. My bed making routine is a little long because I vacuum our duvet to get all the dog hair off it, so some mornings I run out of time. But I completely believe there is a correlation to how productive and positive my day is based on whether I?ve made the bed, so I always try and squeeze it in.

YES or NO
Working from bed?
No ? I used to do this and felt like it was becoming a bad habit. I really try to confine work to my office.

Breakfast (or any meal) in bed?
I love the idea of this, but the reality is that despite the aforementioned vacuuming of the bed, there?s just too much dog hair to make eating in bed seem appealing.

TV in the bedroom?
Yes!

Mikko flashing his best Blue Steel.

How many hours of sleep do you need each night? How many do you actually get?
In an ideal world, I?d love to get around 10 hours of sleep. Or more. I probably get 7 or so a night because I am an incorrigible night owl and I have a hard time getting to sleep before midnight.

What position do you sleep in?
Whatever position Wade, our pug-corgi mix, will allow me to curl up into.

What does your bedtime routine involve?
Now that I?m getting older, I?m trying to be better about skin care, so there?s the cleaning, toning and hydrating that goes along with keeping wrinkles at bay. I always brush my teeth. I?ve had trouble sleeping, and my doctor told me about this all natural sleeping pill which I completely discounted, but it actually works ? it?s called Kavinace. I highly recommend it. We usually watch TV for a while and chat. I?m a huge Seth Meyers fan, so we?ll usually stay up till the first guest, then turn off the TV and call it a night.

Bedtime Stories with the H&W Team

One pillow or two?
Two ? my husband gave me a body pillow when I was pregnant with our older son and I became obsessed with it. 15 years later, I still need a body pillow to sleep well.

Socks or no socks?
In the winter, socks ? I live in MN and being frugal, the temperature in the house is chilly at night. But in the summer, no socks.

White noise or silence?
White noise. We live in the city and can hear a freight train as well as a nearby interstate ? I find these noises soothing. I joke that they?re like hearing the ocean.

Pitch black or night light?
Night light ? or ambient light. Again, city living has made me unaccustomed to being in complete darkness. Our first night at our cabin I was terrified ? when you turned the lights out, you couldn?t see your hand in front of your face it was so pitch dark. It made me feel claustrophobic.

I simply cannot go to bed without: saying ?Good night, Maggie.? Maggie was our first dog, and we would always tell her good night and she?d always snort/huff goodnight back to us. So even though she?s been gone for years, instead of saying good night to each other we both say, ?Good night, Maggie? when we turn out the lights to go to sleep. And triple checking that the garage is closed, the doors are all locked and the alarm clocks are all set.

What pattern and colorway did you choose and why?
I choose Topiary (White). I love that this is a floral without being too flowery and delicate, and that the black and white colorway easily blends with my ever-changing tastes in decor. I also live in a very old home (circa 1725!) and all of the trim is painted in historical colors. This pattern and colorway complements any color scheme (without competing) and feels totally timeless.

Do you make your bed every morning?
It's a very rare occasion that my bed isn't made. I work from home and I walk past my bedroom frequently throughout the day - I just wouldn't be able to focus if I had to keep looking at an unmade bed! Plus, I have lots of four-legged family members that love to sleep on my bed, so I have to keep it made unless I want my sheets with a heavy helping of animal fur.

YES or NO
Working from bed?
Never. My husband and I have a strict policy in my house that the bed is for three things and three things only: reading, sleeping, and adult time ;)

Breakfast (or any meal) in bed?
I used to eat in bed from time to time until an unfortunate mishap with a big bowl of spaghetti, my dog, and my fresh, white bedding. My food-in-bed days came to a screeching halt after that.

TV in the bedroom?
Not anymore (see Working from bed above), but in my younger days I used to fall asleep with Roseanne on. It's still one of my favorite shows ever!

Bedtime Stories with the H&W Team

Where there is cozy bedding and a sun patch, Peeka and Boo will surely be found.

How many hours of sleep do you need each night? How many do you actually get?

I absolutely need 7 but 9 is the sweet spot for me. On most nights, I get between 7 and 8 hours, but that's only in the last few years when I realized that running a business on less than 6 hours of sleep is a recipe for disaster.

What position do you sleep in?
On either side or flat on my back. I read that back-sleeping is healthiest, but I have a lot of junk in my trunk, which can sometimes make that a little uncomfortable.

What does your bedtime routine involve?
I always check that all the doors are locked, the thermostat is turned way down (we like it very cold when we sleep!), and all the lights are off. Then I make my way upstairs to brush my teeth, wash my face, and always, always end the night in bed with a book.

Bedtime Stories with the H&W Team

One pillow or two?
Two stacked on top of each other.

Socks or no socks?
No socks, ever. Socks in bed make my insides feel weird.

White noise or silence?
White noise. It's a habit that started when I lived in a city apartment and it stuck with me even through a move to a much quieter home.

Pitch black or night light?
Pitch black, and I'll go to great lengths to achieve it!

I simply cannot go to bed without: a glass of water next to my bed and saying individual and personalized "goodnights" and "I love yous" to my cats, my dog, and my husband.

KATHERINE BILDSTEN

What pattern and colorway did you choose and why?
I chose Margot (White). I love a good floral, but also gravitate towards white bedding - it feels luxurious to me. This is the best of both! I love the folksy-meets-scandi aesthetic of the pattern.

Do you make your bed every morning?
I...try to. But some days end up rushing out the door...I know, I know...it takes 20 seconds!

YES or NO
Working from bed?
No. I really try to avoid this. But in the past when I have had international colleagues, I'd always take calls from bed if they were super early or late.

Breakfast (or any meal) in bed?
Not too often, but yes - I have been known to spill coffee in bed!

TV in the bedroom?
Yes. I don't have a TV, but I often watch Netflix or HBO Go on my laptop in bed before I go to sleep.

Bedtime Stories with the H&W Team

How many hours of sleep do you need each night? How many do you actually get?
I try to prioritize sleep - I have been pretty good the past couple of years at getting 8, minimum 7. That said, I probably need 9!

What position do you sleep in?
On my side, waaaay on the edge of my bed - I might as well have a twin!

What does your bedtime routine involve?
I take my vitamins, brush my teeth, and write down my priorities for the next day so I don't wake up worrying! I also write in a 5-year, question-a-day journal. If you've ever thought about getting one, I highly recommend it. This year, I'm trying to incorporate nightly reading into my bedtime routine.

One pillow or two?
Two!

Socks or no socks?
None!

White noise or silence?
White noise. I live on a very busy block in Manhattan...the fan is always on!

Pitch black or night light?
Pitch black, although my room gets lovely light in the morning and I love the effect when I sleep in on a Saturday.

I simply cannot go to bed without: saying goodnight to my family, boyfriend or whichever friend I happen to be texting.

OLA SUPERNAT

What pattern and colorway did you choose and why?
I chose Topiary in White (Hydrangea Cobalt was a very close second!). We are in the process of designing our bedroom and I thought the graphic black and white pattern is timeless and will work with any art/decor we decide on.

Do you make your bed every morning?
Currently, yes (but it?s varied over the years). Since the beginning of the year, I?ve been trying to bring more peace and mindfulness into my life and having a neat bed helps me start my day off right.

YES or NO
Working from bed?
No. Unless checking email counts.

Breakfast (or any meal) in bed?
No.

TV in the bedroom?
No.

Bedtime Stories with the H&W Team

How many hours of sleep do you need each night? How many do you actually get?
I like to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. It actually does happen most nights except for several times a month when I have full-on insomnia (I'm working on getting to the bottom of it).

What position do you sleep in?
I try to sleep on my back, but 98% of the time I end up on my side or stomach. (?Center of bed? according to my boyfriend.)

What does your bedtime routine involve?
Besides washing my face and brushing my teeth, I have to heat my feet with running hot water before I get in bed for the night. I will simply not fall asleep otherwise. Once in bed, I usually listen to an audiobook for a little while. Recently, I started meditating?my brain struggles with shutting off on its own.

One pillow or two?
One

Socks or no socks?
Socks

White noise or silence?
Ear plugs

Pitch black or night light?
Eye mask

I simply cannot go to bed without: heating my feet.
