H&W Book Club: Cozy Fall Reads

Posted on September 21, 2018 by Melissa Andersen

Happy first day of fall! While team H&W is always sad to say goodbye to sweet summer, we're equally ecstatic to welcome cooler temps, stunning foliage, and the return of all things cozy. And what could possibly be cozier than curling up with a good book as the brisk autumn winds close in around us? On this edition of H&W Book Club, we're sharing our favorite fall reads, hygge reading essentials, and, as usual, plenty of pattern, too.

What's your favorite book to cozy up with on a crisp autumn day?

Farm From Home is a fantastic book for fall, or really any season. Amanda Brooks, well-known style icon, left New York City to live on her husband’s family farm in England, and this book gives you a glimpse into her life there. If you, like me, have ever dreamed of moving to a farm and embracing a different way of life, you will love this book. It’s basically the most attractive version of that particular daydream. The book is divided by seasons and includes recipes—the fall section and meals are especially charming.

What pattern and colorway did you pair with your book?

I chose Andanza (Blush) because it looks lovely with the cover, but also because that warm pink feels very sweet and cozy, which is the perfect combination for fall.

We’ve all been cozying up with Hygge & West Home, especially as the temps plummet. What’s your favorite home featured in the book?

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child! I love them all equally for different reasons. But the one that I’m especially loving right now is my friend Julie Backer’s Minnesota farm house because she actually did a “Farm From Home.” We had the chance to chat with her daughters when we arrived for the shoot, and they told us about all of their animals and how they became part of the family, and I remember thinking, “These girls are living my dream childhood.” The farm is so sweet and cozy and you can just tell that the Backers and all of their friends and family really deeply enjoy it. Christiana is coming to Minnesota in early October and we’re hoping to go for a visit—Julie has added horses and even more wallpaper since the book shoot!

What are your fall hygge reading essentials?

Well, sadly, reading glasses have recently become an essential for me. I did manage to find a cute pair, which eases the sting a bit. Fall reading really is the best reading, isn’t it? I love wearing a comfy sweater and curling up on the sofa with a nice blanket. Some days you get lucky and the weather is perfect for curling up on the porch sofa with a blanket and a book. I wish I could say that I like a nice cup of tea while I read, but try as I might, I am not a tea person. I much prefer to have a nice glass of red wine at the ready, though I have to be careful and sip slowly or reading time can easily turn into nap time!

CHRISTIANA COOP

What's your favorite book to cozy up with on a crisp autumn day?

I gravitate toward books that are set in New York in the fall, because what better place to be when the leaves start turning than strolling the streets and parks of NYC? I chose to read Bill Cunningham’s Fashion Climbing because I’m so fascinated by his life and career. He lived so genuinely and creatively. I still miss his Sunday Styles section and this book was such an interesting peek into his life beyond his photography.

What pattern and colorway did you pair with your book?

I chose Tilton Fenwick's Florebela (Laurel) because it’s such a lovely, classic pattern, just like the lovely, classic man that was Bill Cunningham.

We’ve all been cozying up with Hygge & West Home, especially as the temps plummet. What’s your favorite home featured in the book?

That’s got to be Stephanie Housley’s! Her cozy cabin was made for cooler months. I’d love to bundle up on her sofa with a cup of tea and enjoy her golden autumn view.

What are your fall hygge reading essentials?

In a perfect fall reading world, I’m bundled up in our H&W bedding, wearing my cozy, white terry cloth bathrobe, drinking a glass of red wine with a candle glowing. And I’ve asked Google Home to play me some jazz.

What's your favorite book to cozy up with on a crisp autumn day?

Currently, I’m reading food recipes on repeat. I was on a very restrictive diet the entire summer due to digestive issues, but recently I’ve been able to start incorporating more foods back into my diet. Because of that, and now that the slightly cooler weather in Portland is making me want to use the oven again, I am obsessed with meal planning and dreaming up new belly- and soul-warming dishes. I subscribed to Bon Appétit and I love it. Not only are the recipes delicious and very manageable, but the magazine’s photography and design are beautiful as well.

What pattern and colorway did you pair with your book?

I picked Bruno (Gold)—it reminds me of turning oak leaves, which are quintessentially fall to me.

We’ve all been cozying up with Hygge & West Home, especially as the temps plummet. What’s your favorite home featured in the book?

I’ve had a crush on Christiana’s apartment ever since I experienced it in person about six years ago. Her home is so considered, yet extremely cozy. It has some impressive pattern mixing and layering and is a fantastic reminder that a space can pack majorly bold style no matter the size.

What are your fall hygge reading essentials?

Pillows, blankets, tea, and my favorite corner of the couch that looks out onto our plant-filled porch.

What's your favorite book to cozy up with on a crisp autumn day?

Fall is by far my favorite season, and one of the many reasons is because it's also the season of Halloween. So every autumn, I like to curl up with a creepy classic tale, and Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories is one I return to time and time again. Not only is the original book far spookier than any made-for-the-big-screen adaptation, but it also takes place in one of Irving's favorite haunts (and mine!), New York's Hudson River Valley. Ever since I was a child, I've spent more weekends in the Hudson Valley than I can count, and autumn is easily the season I will always most associate with this bucolic setting. From the very first page of Sleepy Hollow, I'm transported once again to the stunning beauty of Upstate New York, even if it's for more ominous reasons than usual.

What pattern and colorway did you pair with your book?

I chose Forest Floor (Ebony) because it reminds me of one of my favorite scenes in the book—when Ichabod Crane and his well-meaning, but not-so-trusty steed, Gunpowder, make their way home through the dark woods of Sleepy Hollow after a late-night soiree at the Van Tassel farm... and eventually run into the soul-shaking likes of the Headless Horseman himself.

We’ve all been cozying up with Hygge & West Home, especially as the temps plummet. What’s your favorite home featured in the book?

It's so hard to choose just one (truly, they all are absolutely fabulous!) but I'm so drawn to Aimee's family lake cabin in Wisconsin. I love how she's taken something rustic and pared back and made it so refreshingly modern and pattern-filled, while still retaining the sense that you're tucked away among nature. The carefree cabin lifestyle—living according to and embracing each of the seasons—has always been so appealing to me as someone who lives and works in the NYC metro area, and with Aimee's beautiful home tour and thoughtful interview, I know a cozy lakeside escape (a mental one, at least) is always within reach.

What are your fall hygge reading essentials?

A crackling fire, a hot drink, warm socks, and a cozy blanket are absolute musts for fall reading. Bonus points if all of the above are beneath a crisp autumn sky!
