What inspired this space?

We had a guest room upstairs, but it was right in between our room and our sons’ rooms, and guests would share a bathroom with our boys. It was less than ideal. When I lost my dad two and a half years ago, we knew that my mom would be coming to stay with us more frequently and we wanted her to have a nice space when she is here. We had an existing room that was Manny’s “office”—it was constantly a mess and had a weird kitchenette and tiny bathroom. So we decided to repurpose that space into a basement guest suite. Style-wise, I wanted it to feel special and beautiful. We want guests to feel like they’re staying in a charming little boutique hotel.

Which wallpaper did you choose and what did it bring to the space?

I decided not to use wallpaper in the bedroom, but I’m still toying with adding it at some point. I just liked how light and fresh the space felt with simple white walls. But the king bed is covered with our Andanza (Rose) bedding, which adds a nice amount of pattern to the space, while still keeping it soft and neutral. The lights in this room are one of my favorite things in the whole house. I first saw them forever ago when Christiana and I were in Paris. They are so beautiful and so delightful—people cannot resist commenting on them.

I used Cards wallpaper and shower curtain in the bathroom and I just love how it turned out. The entire space has a bit of a Parisian vibe, and the bathroom really amps it up. The black and white is so bold and graphic, but the card and polka dot elements keep it light and fun. Before I wallpapered, the space felt too white and sterile. It lacked personality, which is certainly no longer the case.

How has this space improved the way you and your family use it?

It’s basically like having a completely new addition to the house. Before, it was just wasted space and now it’s a beautiful, functional suite. We love having a dedicated, separate space for guests so they feel comfortable and welcome.

What inspired your design decisions for the entire home remodel?

Our house was built in 1908 and has a lot of original detail, so first and foremost, I wanted to ensure that the design respected the integrity of the home. I wanted it to feel like it had always been that way, and not that some new, modern spaces had been inserted into the home. Overall, our vibe is pretty casual—it was more important to us that the new spaces function well than that they looked a certain way. That said, being in the line of work that I am in, a lot of what we chose was inspired by my library of design books and magazines. And then everything was run past (H&W co-founder) Christiana, who is my interior decorator.
